Tear-Pearling — you can draw a single pearl of frozen memory from the water's surface once per century, and it holds the last sound of anything that drowned in the same water. The pearl must be worn on bare skin, or it crumbles.

The tide pools at the base of the Silverstar cliffs were always your place. You went there to count the starfish and watch the anemones pulse. Then one afternoon, the water did not recede with the tide. It stayed, and in its stillness, you saw your own face reflected in the eye of a dead jellyfish. That was the first time the sea spoke to you. It has not stopped since.
