You were clearing a clogged drainpipe behind the old mill, the water backing up in a slow, stinking flood. When your hand closed around a reed root that had grown through the pipe, the water suddenly cleared and you saw a tiny whirlpool open in the air above your palm. From it came a sound like a broken flute, and the reeds along the bank began to sway in a language you understood.
