You keep a ship's bell that rings underwater, though no one can hear it but the drowned. It was the first thing you pulled from a wreck, and you held it until the salt stole the clapper. Now it sits on a ledge of coral, and you tap it sometimes, just to feel the silence answer. The bell came from a schooner that went down in a squall you called. You did not mean to sink it — you were young and the storm got away from you. But the wreck teaches you: the sea does not forgive curiosity.
