Each dusk you walk the same path over the moor, counting the sheep that have died since the last evening: the number is never the same. The shepherds think you are mad. They do not ask why you carry a spade. You have dug up the same skeleton seven times — it belongs to a man who owned this land before the ash fell — and each time the bones murmur the same warning: the ash remembers what the fire forgot.
