Every dusk you kindled a small fire in the briar patch behind the old temple, burning dried herbs and listening to the crackle. The smoke coiled into shapes of warning and welcome, and the thorns spoke your name. It never occurred to you that anyone else could not hear them.

Delphine — “the dolphin”; of Delphi.
