You were clearing brambles at the edge of a fallow field, the moon already rising pale in the afternoon sky. Your billhook split a stone, and inside lay a black root pulsing with damp earth. When you touched it, your hand sank into the ground up to the wrist. You yanked it free, and the soil rippled like water. That night you dreamed of roots stitching the world together below, and woke with clay under your nails.
Where the name comes from
Gideon — “the hewer, feller of trees”.
Wildhurst — Wild (the wild) + hurst (wooded hill).
