You were pruning the hedge along the Blackgate on a Tuesday morning, just the ordinary work of keeping things neat. A wood pigeon startled from the thicket and your hand went into the thorn instead of around it — the bramble folded like a hinge, and you saw the other side of your garden, but it wasn't yours. The gate stood open for a second, and you stepped through.
