"Thorne, you've got the fire in your fingertips," the old woman said, wiping soot from your cheek. You were nine, stirring a pot of yarrow tea. You didn't understand until you set the drying bundle ablaze just by staring too hard. The flames licked the rafters and left the yarrow unburnt. After that, you learned to coax smoke into shapes, and the weasel appeared one morning in the ash bed, clean as a fresh ember.
